The Queens County Citizen is suspending operations effective immediately.
Our frequent requests for reader support have been largely ignored.
Despite more than 180,000 article views in our 11-month existence, we have received monetary contributions from only 14 readers.
Perhaps we should have charged for subscriptions and set up paywalls. Maybe we should have been more compromising in our editorial positions to attract advertising. Whatever the case, these steps were not part of our desired business model and we have no regrets.
Journalism is in crisis everywhere. At some point, if people don’t pay for local news, it will disappear. In the case of The Queens County Citizen, that “some point” is today.
Thank you to everyone who has read and engaged with our work. Thanks as well to the few generous souls who demonstrated their support for local journalism by actually paying for it.
