How we test video doorbells
Testing to identify the best video doorbell is the same as testing anything else. First I downloaded the relevant app and created an account (if I do not already have one). Although the tutorial booklets in the box with your purchase contain many products, I would like to start with the app. A good app contains detailed steps on the installation process, as well as how to connect to your Wi-Fi network and how to actually run the device. This is your one stop shop to take your doorbell setup from start to finish.
Make sure the doorbell is installed based on the manufacturer’s specifications – hard wired or battery- or solar powered. As soon as it is connected and I can see the live video feed, I will check the settings. I make sure features like motion detection or activity zones are enabled (they are not always turned on by default) to get a full understanding of what product use means – and to see how well the device actually works as a replacement for the regular, nonSmart doorbell.
What to see
Does it work with smart home platforms? If so, do they work well together? Smart home devices these days are expected to work with at least one large smart home platform – Amazon Alexa, And The main ones you need to see.
How is the delay? If your smart doorbell camera takes too long to get a push alert after someone rang your doorbell, you run the risk of completely losing your visitor. This can be true even when the doorbell detects movement – you can set the motion sensor of most video doorbells to let you know the activity that takes place near your door, even if no one buzzer rings.
If you have delay issues, get started with your Wi-Fi connection. If it is not strong enough where the doorbell is installed, you may want to consider moving it (or, more easily, getting a Wi-Fi range extension). But it may also be the way the software works.
How is the live view? Doorbells are often exposed to direct sunlight, but can also be installed under more porches, near shade trees and in all other settings. It’s important to have night vision for the camera and can handle any of these scenes so you don’t get caught up with a non-working product that you can’t see the faces under a porch.
How about two-way audio? If the doorbell’s microphone and speaker do not work properly, it will be very difficult for you to communicate with those who are there. I tested it several times to see how the audio of the doorbell sounds on my phone.
