Four people were injured in a hospital in China

Russian scientist dies after being arrested and dragged from hospital bed

A knife-wielding man wounded four people at a prominent hospital in Shanghai on Saturday, before being shot and wounded by security forces trying to subdue him, police said.

Police immediately dispatched agents after receiving calls for help in the late morning from Ruijin Hospital in the heart of the Chinese economic capital.

“Police immediately rushed to the scene and found a man holding people hostage with a knife on the seventh floor of the hospital,” police said in a statement.

“When the suspect attempted to attack the hostages and officers, the police opened fire to injure and subdue him,” the statement added.

Four people were injured and are being treated for non-life threatening symptoms, police said.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear at this time.

In videos published by Chinese media, we see police entering a closed room in the hospital. Another video, which is doing the rounds on social media, shows people running away from the building.

Mass crimes are rare in China, where the carrying of firearms is strictly prohibited, but stabbings do occur occasionally.
