Olimel closure at Valli-Junction: "We are in shock"

The closure of the Olymel plant in Valley-Junction has ramifications for the Beauce region of Chaudière-Appalachia. Pork producers should reduce their production.

The Chaudière-Appalaches region represents 32% of the province’s pork production.

“As a pork producer in Buis, as our slaughterhouse is located in Valley-Junction, we were shocked after this announcement. We’ve heard big decisions are going to be made, but ultimately it will mean closing our factory,” pork producer Simon Breton told TVA Novelles.

Reducing or shutting down production is the choice producers face following the announcement of the Olimel plant. This is the biggest challenge Mr. Bovin has faced in his 28-year career.

“Over the years, we have had to face many challenges. Among others, environmental challenges, strike at Valli-Junction, Covid issues which increased our production costs, border closures. We are very much looking for challenges,” he testified.

Financial experts in the region will meet on Monday. A press briefing will be announced.
