A speakeasy, complete with armchairs, umbrellas and artificial turf, was set up in the middle of a sidewalk at the corner of 23rd Street and Champa Street.

“We heard there was an open bar, alcohol sales and things like that,” Denver Police Patrol Division Chief Aaron Sanchez said in an interview with CBS Colorado.

Officials began monitoring the situation after receiving several calls from citizens who complained that the camp was blocking the sidewalk and forcing pedestrians to walk on the street.

When they reached there, the police found many empty bottles in the place.

Witnesses reported renting tents near the speakeasy for prostitutes to meet clients.

Meghan Shay, leader of the community organization Step Denver, told CBS that the camp, which serves alcohol to the homeless, is exacerbating the problem of homelessness.
