National Bank customers were in for a surprise Friday after several people were mistakenly debited from a few hundred to thousands of dollars due to a “technical anomaly.”
This is the case of Sophie Bouchard, who saw more than $2,700 withdrawn from her account through a bank transfer she did not make.
“I went to the grocery store and I used a credit card that I don’t normally use with a small amount, I wanted to go and pay that amount right away and I panicked when I got to my account. I saw 0$”, she explained in an interview with LCN.
“It was actually $2,736.41 taken from my bank account,” she continues. It was marked “transferred” and when we went to check, we didn’t see anything, we didn’t know who it was transferred to.
Mme Bouchard wasn’t the only one to report such a situation, several people wrote to the National Bank on X (formerly Twitter) to express their concerns.
“Almost $2500 was withdrawn from my account within hours.. this has been going on for a long time,” said one user.
“My credit card was debited for $900, so I’m waiting to find out how and when I’m going to get reimbursed,” said one user.
The financial institution finally suggested the whole thing was due to a computer problem via a late-afternoon publication on X (formerly Twitter).
“A technical anomaly is currently affecting certain Interac transfer transactions. Rest assured that we are doing everything we can to restore the situation as soon as possible.
M’s transactionme Bouchard was repaid overnight Friday through Saturday.
“Yesterday when I went to bed it was almost midnight and there was no money in my account and this morning it was all back,” she said. This is still worrying. We do transfers and we think it’s safe and I’m wondering if I should use another way to pay.
National Bank did not provide further details on when the incident will be resolved for all affected customers.
