Bucharest, Romania – Wimbledon champion Simona Halep tested positive for Kovid-19 and said on Saturday she was “recovering well from mild symptoms”.
Halep, 29, currently ranked 2nd in the world, skipped the US Open for fear of catching a coronavirus. She said in August that she would love to stay in Europe and train.
The Romanian athlete announced her test result on Saturday.
“I want to let you know that I tested positive for COVID-19. I self-isolate at home and recover well from mild symptoms. I’m fine … we’ll get through this together, ”Halep said on Twitter.
Halep, a former top-ranked player, won Wimbledon in 2019 and the French Open in 2018. Wimbledon was canceled this year due to the epidemic.
Many European countries are experiencing a high number of COVID-19 infections. New lockdowns spread this week in France, Germany and other parts of Europe.
Countries such as Switzerland, Italy, Bulgaria and Greece have closed or detained nightspots and imposed other restrictions such as curfews and mandatory wearing of masks.
In August, Halep expressed concern about going to New York for the US Open.
