Alberta Health Medical Officer Dr Deena Hinsha tweeted Friday that the province’s health system needs to continue to support those in need of medical care.
She announced that health care workers who test positive for COVID-19 would now have to be isolated for only 10 days rather than 14 days after the onset of symptoms, a move that could increase the number of staff and disrupt hospitals and other intensive care sites.
“Health care workers are isolated for 10 days after the onset of symptoms or until symptoms resolve, after which they can resume their normal activities,” Hinsha tweeted. “(It) allows staff to work safely back in the absence of a symptom and to provide the safe, quality care that patients need.”
The move would bring rules for health care workers to comply with the rest of the Alberts, which only have 10 days to separate and does not change Alberta’s legal detention period.
There are currently 180 health care workers with COVID-19 in Calgary and 196 in Edmonton. A total of 2,354 workers recovered from the virus.
