Strong winds, heavy rain on the way as the ‘strong storm’ reaches the south coast of BC

A powerful storm will bring heavy winds, rain and snow to some parts of the south coast early Tuesday morning.

The Environment Canada said it was on the verge of a “severe storm” and that wind warnings were in effect for northern Vancouver Island and the metro Vancouver areas.

Southeasterly winds of 110 km per hour are expected overnight and early Tuesday morning in the open areas of North Vancouver Island and the Central Coast.

Heavy rain and up to five centimeters of snow are expected in the hinterland, including the Island Highway, Port Alberni and Sutton Pass.

According to Environment Canada, the Cold Front Metro brings wide and powerful southeastern winds into Vancouver. Guests are possible up to 90 km per hour.

Emergency crews are preparing for a storm on Vancouver Island and the Delta in BC, which will ease later Tuesday.

An avalanche warning for the Kokihalla Highway is also in effect, with 20 cm of snow expected on Monday night.

BC Ferries canceled some sailors on Tuesday

As of Monday night, BC Ferries had canceled some morning sailing on several routes between Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.

The city of Courtane deployed a waterlogged barrier called the Aquadam during the Solomon River overflow due to the storm.

BC Hydro said its crew was preparing for a power outage and encouraging people to report fallen power lines.

The company said Lake Buntgen, 45 minutes east of Vancouver, was closed to the public due to high winds.

Last week, the Vancouver Park Board closed the sea wall on Friday, November 13 due to weather conditions.

The Delta city issued a storm surge warning for the Tsavassen area on Tuesday morning due to King Tide and high winds. Water levels are expected to rise by 8 a.m., but flooding is dependent on winds.

The city said emergency personnel, including engineering, fire and police personnel, plan to set up an incident command post and staging area Tuesday morning.

Preparations are underway under the Staged Flood Preparedness and Response Plan for Boundary Bay and Beach Grove to protect beach areas.

The switchboard will open at 7:30 a.m. to answer questions and resolve issues from the public.
