TORONTO – The Hamilton Tiger-Cats will own the first overall pick in the 2021 CFL Draft after the May picks were revealed Saturday evening.
During TSN’s two-hour TV special Gray Cup Unit, CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrose unveiled the results from a random draw of equal weight in nine CFL clubs for the 2021 CFL Draft Order.
Earlier in November CFL has announced that it is adjusting its plans for its 2021 draft U SPORTS in Canada, NCAA teams in the United States and Canadian players from junior football.
The changes were proposed by the general managers of the nine teams, which were later approved by the club presidents, who serve on the CFL’s management board.
The total 2021 CFL Draft Order is as follows:

More on recent changes in the CFL Draft:
- The draft order is determined by a random draw of equal weight in the nine CFL clubs. Teams from the previous season traditionally select qualified players in an order based on their records, with the team with the worst record first selecting to promote equality, excluding trades. The 2020 CFL draft followed that traditional format. CFL 2020 is not showing a season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- The 2021 CFL draft will have a “snake” format. That is, after the teams are selected in the first round, in a sequence determined by a random draw, they are selected in reverse order in the second round, and that pattern continues. For example, a team that finished ninth in the first round will finish first in the second round.
- The 2021 CFL draft will be six rounds long instead of the traditional eight rounds. The 2021 CFL training camps will include a “double cohort” of Canadian rookies, with a group from the 2020 and 2021 CFL drafts.
- There will be no spatial options in the 2021 CFL Draft.
