Some of the DCs sent to the demonstrations in Washington. Officials said Tuesday that National Guard troops have tested positive for Kovit-19 – members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force have warned governors that infections in connection with nationwide protests will increase.
Beginning May 31, more than 1,300 DC residents have been invited to assist law enforcement in responding to anti-police brutal protests in the nation’s capital. There were service members in the National Guard. McClatchy confirmed to DC.
He would not say how many troops tested positive for the virus, but U.S. officials told the Associated Press that it does not currently have large numbers.
The news comes following reports that two members of the Nebraska National Guard, which had been activated in response to the demonstrations in Lincoln, tested positive.
About 5,000 troops were stationed in Washington for civil unrest, including DC, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Maryland, Missoute, Mississippi, New Jersey, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee and Utah.
Most people do not wear masks, and it is often impossible to maintain social distance during protests.
Many health officials – including the nation’s best infectious disease specialist Dr. Anthony Fasi – Fear that mass demonstrations triggered by the police-related death of George Floyd could lead to new outbreaks of the virus.
President Trump’s Corona Virus Response Coordinator, Dr. Deborah Birks, on Monday expressed fears that the spread would increase in a conference call with governors, The Daily Beast reports the news.
In the call, which was obtained through its record store, Birks said the administration was concerned that protesters would deny the health benefits of shouting.
He also warned that the destruction of checkpoints at the demonstrations could hinder efforts to contain the epidemic, advising governors to “fight now to make sure the testing is available in urban areas.”
Vice President Mike Pence, who led the call, said the outbreak of protest-related epidemic “is an issue that our group is following, a concern.”
Despite the concern, Pence said it was “undeniable” that the country was ready to reopen, and many governors agreed.
