Australia: Prime Minister of the most populous state resigns

Sydney | The prime minister of Australia’s most populous state resigned on Friday amid a corruption scandal that left Sydney residents without a leader for months.

Sydney-based New South Wales Chief of Staff Gladys Beregillian has announced she is stepping down from Parliament after an anti-corruption agency launched an investigation into allegations of corruption against her.

“My resignation as prime minister did not take place at a more deadly time, but that moment was not entirely beyond my control,” Ms Berijkillian told reporters.

“I do not want to divert the attention of the state government from the top priority during this epidemic which is the welfare of our citizens. It has always been and will always be so,” added the Prime Minister, who has appeared on television almost daily since the outbreak of the Kovid-19 epidemic.

This conservative leader has been head of state since 2017.

The state Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating whether she acted in favor of her then boyfriend, the then Member of Parliament, in granting grants to her voters. The allegations were denied by Ms. Berrigillian.

Nearly 5 million people have been restricted in Sydney since the end of June, a measure that should be lifted by October 11.

The number of daily COVID-19 cases began to decline, but New South Wales continued to record more than 800 per day.
