(Newark) A two-month-old boy who was choking at a security checkpoint at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey is rescued by a security guard jumping on a luggage carousel.
Images released by the US National Transportation Safety Agency (TSA) on Thursday show Constable Cecilia Morales rushing to save the baby on December 9 after noticing the baby was not breathing.
Cecilia Morales, a paramedic who had been a security guard for about two months, said she had performed an infantile version of the Heimlich maneuver, holding the baby in her arms and tapping her back to breathe.
She says this is the first time she has applied this technique to a toddler. A pediatric paramedic arrived shortly after to give the baby oxygen. A TSA spokesman said the agency did not know what caused the baby to stop breathing.
“I watched the video after that,” Cecilia Morales said. It was the first time I had ever seen myself in a life-saving action. It was thrilling to watch. I felt that my training and my experience were gaining the upper hand.
“She’s two months’ work and she’s already a lifeline,” Thomas Carter, TSA’s federal security director for New Jersey, said in a statement. Agent Morales’ quick response and actions helped make this family a happy holiday season. His actions are inspiring. ”
