The UK could build seven nuclear power plants by 2050

The Energy Minister said on Sunday that the UK could build seven nuclear power plants by 2050 by banking offshore as part of a new strategy to increase its energy independence following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

According to the newspaper, after intense internal negotiations, the government of Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson will present its strategy on Thursday to reduce the UK’s energy dependence and achieve the net zero emissions target by 2050.

“There is a sense in the government that we can do more on the nuclear,” Quasi Quarteng said.

By 2050, “there will be a world with six or seven sites in the UK,” he continued. “It’s not going to happen in the next two years, but it’s exactly what we want.”

According to the Sunday Telegraph, the plan calls for the construction of at least two large-scale nuclear power plants by 2030, along with small modular reactors, so most of the nuclear sites in operation must close by this deadline.

On the contrary, the Minister emphasized that hydraulic fracturing and onshore wind power would not play a major role in the new strategy due to the “strong local opposition” faced by these technologies.

In addition to sanctions against Russian interests, London has also targeted the energy sector with a ban on oil imports by the end of the year.
