Benoit Roberge has made not one, but two major stops abroad in recent months, bringing us two new shows at Evasion. Oops! “I was really depressed this winter, the facilitator admitted. I thought about what I was going to do. I didn’t know if my programs would come back in Zeste… And then came these two consecutive trips: Benoit among the Belgians And Thai Tower.”

Right now he can be found guiding us through the land of fries, waffles, chocolate and beer. Benoît walked in Liège and Namur as well as in Ostend, Bruges, Antwerp and Brussels… When visiting the capital, was he disappointed by the small size of the Manneken Pis, the symbol of Belgium? “Yeah. It shows when the buzz hits on something… But there are days when we wear it, so it’s a little funny. You wonder what he’s going to wear the day you’re there. He’s already dressed in fleur-de-lys like Elvis on St. John’s Day. …”

Unforgettable encounters

He made some great friends. Especially with Belgian humorist Bruno Coppens. “He’s so funny! It’s a big hit! He was coming to Quebec in the fall and he said to me: ‘You come on stage to tune in.’” As a great fan of comics, Benoit spoiled himself. “I met Midam, the maker Kid paddle board. He welcomed me into his home. It is interesting to ask why the Belgians are so recognized in the field of comics.

With friends in Thailand

Benoit also traveled to Thailand to shoot the show with his friend Jean-Michel Dufaux. Thai Tower, we’ll see this fall. “It’s a place that Jean-Michel knows very well. He’s been coming there often since 1998. He talked a lot about it. I found it far away. He asked me: “When are we going there?” And there, we were doing it together for TV, it was touching.

A 35-day trip, during the great heat, gastronomic, but also introspective and spiritual. “We visited temples. There are emotional moments. We went to the monks. I talked about my father who passed away in 2018 … ”In this series, we see the depth of their friendship that spanned 25 years. “I owe him a lot to Jean-Michel, because he was there at the beginning of my career. We did street entertainment together before the Just for Laughs galas for Canal Indigo, he recalls. Making a good team. He knew his stuff well, I was overreacting. .

The pain of love

Work allowed him not only to meet friends, but also to experience love. While shooting in France a few years ago, Benoit fell in love with Parisian Marie Sanson. The couple recounted their sentimental story in a book released in fall 2020, Our Crossings: A Romantic and Practical Notebook in Montreal and Paris. “With the pandemic, our story doesn’t stand up. It was very difficult for me. I really fell very, very low. We are not filming and I am heartbroken, he said. There was a good age difference between us… and Mary couldn’t see me giving up everything to come here and live. Me, I went there often, but not enough to say I could make my career there. This means we split in 2020 at the start of the pandemic. Hard work for a year and a half! Besides, our book arrived after the breakup! Today, I am talking about it and it is fine, but in this period, I am not strong.
