Russia, which was not invited to Elizabeth II’s funeral, condemned the “insulting” attitude from London

Russia on Thursday condemned the UK’s “insulting” and “immoral” attitude towards it, after London decided not to invite a Russian representative to the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on Monday amid diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

“We consider this British attempt to settle accounts with our country (…) of a national tragedy that has touched the hearts of millions of people around the world for geopolitical interests to be grossly immoral,” the Russian foreign minister lamented in a press release. Maria Zakharova.

“This is particularly blasphemous to the memory of Elizabeth II,” she added.

A Russian diplomatic spokesman has denied that the United Kingdom is using Russia’s attack in Ukraine as an “excuse” not to invite the Russian leader to Elizabeth II’s funeral in London on Monday 19 September.

Russia – along with its Belarusian allies Burma and North Korea – was not invited to the funeral of the queen, who died last Thursday at the age of 96, in a sign of its pariah status in the West.

Elizabeth II’s funeral next week at Westminster Abbey is a major diplomatic event and more than 100 crown princes, heads of state and other dignitaries are expected.

Russia’s absence bears witness to the strained diplomatic relations between Moscow and London over the years, from the Skripal affair in 2018 to the conflict in Ukraine.
