Laval citizen data stolen?

24 hours after the cyberattack that paralyzed Ville de Laval’s computer system, the municipality has not confirmed whether citizens’ data was stolen.

“We don’t have answers to all our questions. We are currently analyzing. We have teams of experts,” Laval Mayor Stéphane Boyer told TVA Novelles.

The latter adds that a special team from Microsoft on cyber security is in the process of analyzing all activities on the City network and its 250 servers.

“We have no problem. Everything related to 911, police, fire, water treatment, all critical services are intact. But citizens can sleep on their two ears, there is no reason to believe that their information has been stolen as we speak,” Stefan Boer assured.

Cybercrime specialist Eric Parent is skeptical. According to him, it could have been a negligent employee who allowed the hackers in.

“The problem with that is you can’t tell employees not to open emails with attached files. Anyone in human resources receives resumes,” he explains.

As of now, the intruder has not demanded a ransom and no information has been shared on the dark web, Eric Parent points out.

“After 24 hours we don’t know anything. We don’t know much. So it is a bit bold to say that citizen data is not affected,” said a cybercrime expert.
