The Spanish government has accused the Colombian popstar of failing to pay her taxes in the country between 2012 and 2014. His team said she spent more than 183 days a year in Spain during that time, making her a tax resident. His primary residence is in the Bahamas.
In an interview with ELLE magazine, the Hip’s Don’t Lie singer said, “on principle,” she chose to fight the allegations in court rather than settle the case privately.
“Because I have to fight for what I believe in, because these are false accusations,” she said. First of all, I didn’t spend 183 days a year during that time. I am busy fulfilling my professional commitments around the world. Second, before they took legal action, I paid everything they claimed I owed. So to this day, I owe them nothing. Finally, I was advised by PricewaterhouseCoopers, one of the four largest tax firms in the world, so I was confident that I was doing things correctly and transparently from day one.
The 45-year-old singer has accused the government of having no evidence to support their ‘fanciful claims’ and engaging in a ‘salacious press campaign’ to try to force her to settle the case. “But I am confident that I have sufficient evidence to support my case and that justice will be done in my favour”…
