Barbada the Star Fairy: A drag queen reacts to her detractors

Ever since it was announced that drag queen Barbada will be participating as the Star Fairy in the next Santa Claus parade in Montreal, social networks have been flooded with insults.

However, this will prevent a Barbadian woman from shining alongside Santa Claus on November 19. On the contrary.

“Talk good about it, talk bad about it, but talk about it,” she replied to Tat for Tat on Thursday afternoon in an interview with QMI Agency.

“People have the right to comment on social networks, this is part of the freedom we have, but tell yourself one thing, the more these people speak against it, the more people will talk about it and it will encourage the organizers to continue pulling in events like this “booking”, she said.

First drag, but one of the few people of color to wear the costume of Fairy of the Stars, Barbada sees her appointment as a great way to continue her work with youth in recent years. For her, the organizers’ decision was also timely and in the same vein as Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” where Ariel was played by an actress of Afro-descendant in a humanized version.

“Just because we’ve been doing something for decades we can’t rethink it and try to make it more inclusive and diverse,” argues the drag queen, who under her colorful and flamboyant features, is the youth show “Barbada” on ICI TOU.TV.

“It’s a great honor and a great endorsement of what I’m doing and what we want to achieve. It is in perfect continuity with public broadcasts and readings,” she added.

Note that Sebastian Potvin, alias Barbada, knows how to deal with children. An elementary school music teacher, he serves his shift in the guise of “story time” at libraries, bookstores, and daycare centers. In this regard, Barbada will be substituted for the November 19 reading at Frontenac Library.

In the past, Ima, Marie-Mai, Marie-Eve Janvier, Vanessa Pilon and Joanie Rochet have voiced the Star Fairy. “I think these are big shoes to wear, but at the same time I have big feet so it should be fine,” the drag queen continued with a laugh.

With a 100% electric approach, the traditional Santa Claus Parade will take place on Saturday, November 19, through the streets of downtown Montreal. It will be broadcast on TVA the following day at 4 p.m.

Sébastien Benoit and Isabelle Racicot provide the entertainment, while Pascal Morissette walks through the crowd to collect testimonies from those interested.
