“This is the first time this has happened to me, I don’t know how to react,” Brandon Marchand-Bibeau said at a police hearing after the tragedy on September 27, 2021.

The 26-year-old accused appeared unsteady in a video of his trial presented Thursday in a Montreal court, saying he suspected he had just run into someone and then changed his mind.

Marchand-Bibeau was in his truck when he turned the corner at the corner of Park and Mont-Royal avenues, according to the Crown’s testimony. Apart from that, he did not see a cyclist on his way. Andrea Rovere, 31, was dragged on her bike for 300 meters when it ran over her.

Blind spots

“The driver moved the bike from under his truck to the curb and headed to a construction site where gravel was to be delivered,” says an expert’s report, based on the testimony of a passing postman.

Marchand-Bibeau was arrested a short time later in the Outremont sector.

“You didn’t come here for danger, not to stop you,” explained the researcher.

Overwhelmed by the events, Marchand-Bibeau then said he was “in shock”, swearing he didn’t feel anything during the collision.

He told the police investigation that there were plenty of blind spots.

Marchand-Bibeau’s trial, which has pleaded not guilty, continues on Friday before Judge Pierre LaBelle.
