Another record: Alex Ovechkin surpasses Wayne Gretzky

Failing to surpass Wayne Gretzky’s 894 career goals, Alexander Ovechkin brought down another mark of “The Wonder” on the road Tuesday night.

By scoring twice in a 5-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks, the Washington Capitals captain tied and then surpassed Gretzky’s 402 total. The Russian scored each time in the first half.

“It’s always nice to beat ‘La Merville’. Regardless of the record, it’s historic,” Ovechkin responded, as always, in few words, during the press briefing.

It was also Ovie’s 792nd and 793rd career goals. And so he registered more outside the Capital One Arena. Will he feel less pressure abroad than in front of supporters in Washington? It’s hard to tell, but he seems to be having a lot of fun away from America’s capital.

“Looks like we’re still having fun on the road. We spend a lot of time together and I think everyone likes it,” he said.

Reaction to altitude

Ovechkin celebrated both of his goals soberly, not used to paying attention to records. However, head coach Peter Laviolette reminded everyone in the locker room of the feat’s significance after the game.
