Montreal Journal: A Laval dentist has been temporarily disbarred and ordered to pay a $40,000 fine for improperly treating his patients and making false entries on their bills.

“The parties emphasize that these offenses are very serious and at the heart of the profession, as they are contrary to the fundamental values ​​of independence, trustworthiness, honesty and integrity,” the Disciplinary Council of the Order of Dentists wrote in its decision. Quebec (ODQ).

Dr. Stephanie Gamache-Gallant, owner of Dental Clinic of the Future, has been suspended from her practice since June 8 and for three months. She was found guilty of ten counts last month and ordered to pay a $40,000 fine.

“Such conduct damages the good name of all members of the profession, which the public believes is profitable and commercial”, condemned Dr Stefan Parent, assistant syndic of the ODQ.

False claims

Dr. Stephanie Gamache-Gallant was originally convicted of entering false information on a patient complaint form. The dentist wrote that a root canal was done on one person in particular, which was wrong.

“Undistributed or misrepresented professional practice invoices are likely to mislead patients or their insurers. Such a practice will have the effect of unnecessarily increasing the financial burden of insurers, which will affect all policyholders who will increase their premiums,” warns the syndic.

Ms. Gamache-Gallant, who received her doctorate in dentistry at UdeM in 2010, also provided inappropriate treatment to patients. For example, a dentist extracted two teeth from a woman’s mouth without real justification and without obtaining her informed consent.

“However, a periodontal examination shows that alternative treatments exist and can save dogs. […] According to the parties, a dentist should not take any risk of endangering the health of his patient without being fully informed and understanding of these risks,” the court document revealed.

“Unreasonable” prices

The owner of the Dental Clinic of the Future was also found guilty of charging clients “unfair and unreasonable” fees for making crowns in the laboratory.

The dentist also shared her fees with one of her dental hygienists, which is against her code of ethics.
