The rapidly changing world of work faces many challenges, especially post-pandemic labor shortages.

In the current environment, many are thinking how to attract new employees in 2024.

A professor in the Department of Organization and Human Resources of the School of Management Sciences at UQAM, Jacques Forest, answered this question.

“There are three universal psychological needs to be satisfied, namely, autonomy, competence, and social affiliation,” he says from the beginning.

Experts say the way these needs are met may differ from one generation to another, but the basic needs at work remain the same, “regardless of age, career stage, ethnic origin or education level.

A new trend

Some talk about the “hotelization” of work, that is, making the workplace more attractive to attract or retain staff.

Mr. Forrest says that “optimal functioning” is not only about meeting needs at work, but also outside the professional context.

“So when groups of people advocate for a balance between work and private life from a societal perspective, we should welcome it,” the expert said. Happy countries can advance both labor and social policies.

The professor opined that the new trend observed is that well-being takes precedence over performance.

Telecommuting

Teleworking, a luxury for certain types of jobs that offers both advantages and disadvantages, is a “double-edged sword”.

“Beyond a reasonable doubt,” no research has demonstrated a benefit of one or the other, Mr. Forrest said.

However, “virtual face-to-face lacks the qualities of warmth, non-verbal communication and informality”.
