Shots took place at the DMZ border between North and South Korea

The North Korean gunfire did not injure anyone or cause visible damage to guard posts or equipment, said the South Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). Several bullets from the North were fired at the DMZ at 7.41 am local time, JCS said in a text message to the press.

The South Korean military responded by broadcasting verbal warnings and returning fire twice, according to the protocol described in the response manual and on the assessment of the field commander, according to the JCS statement.

The South Korean military said that “the military is in the process of identifying the situation through military communication channels with North Korea and preventing any additional situations from occurring.”
