TikTok: More income for creators

TikTok creators' earnings have grown 250% in the past six months, thanks to the new “TikTok Creator Fund,” the company announced in a press release on Tuesday.

It's a new creator remuneration program that was reintroduced a year ago, replacing a widely criticized US$1 billion (about CAN$1.35 billion) fund by TikTok's content creators.

The revamped fund addresses complaints from creators about underpayments under the previous model, earning small sums for videos that attract a few million views.

Originally called the Creativity Program, the revamped program will now be known as the “Creator Rewards Program” as it exits beta. Unlike its predecessor, this program rewards creators for longer content, encouraging videos longer than a minute. TikTok claims a significant increase in user engagement with longer videos, with viewers spending 50% of their time on the app watching such content.

Paid Subscription Program

TikTok announced on Tuesday that creators can now offer paid subscriptions as part of its latest efforts to offer more monetization options to keep top talent on the app.

The company said in its release that its subscription option, formerly known as “Live Subscription,” will be expanded to Live Creators in the coming weeks.
