Nurses are forced to use non-compliant gloves

Nurses from Lanaudière denounced the use of gloves that they considered non-compliant, imposed by their employer.

Gloves provided by FIQ Lanaudière CISSS de Lanaudière provide limited protection for staff and patients.

The hospital received untested gloves from the Quebec government, which it bought during the pandemic when medical equipment was in short supply. Quebec is now selling its surplus equipment of low quality.

The CISSS de Lanaudière nurses' union says it has already filed several complaints with its employer regarding the use of these gloves.

“We are in our last resort. We are moving towards the protection of citizens […] And with the CNESST inspector we are looking forward to more rapid actions,” Raphael, the union agent for the prevention of occupational health and safety at FIQ Lanadier, told TVA Nouvelles.

For its part, the CISSS told TVA Nouvelles that untested gloves are reserved for sectors where their use is deemed appropriate.

“Clinical conditions that require a different type of glove can be identified, monitored and controlled,” says Véronique Talbot, Head of Communications at CISSS de Lanaudière.

However, the union is concerned about the presence of these gloves in common areas, such as the cafeteria.

“I don't understand why people are obviously suggesting that the gloves don't work and aren't up to standard, when these people work there every day and we don't hear them, and then we're stuck with them. At CISSS de Llanaudiere the organizers decide what should happen, how people should be protected. I think this is really unacceptable,” said Marie-Chantal Bédard, president of FIQ Lanaudière.

CNESST has launched an investigation into the use of these gloves.
