Venezuela claims to have captured two Americans involved in a failed invasion

Maduro accused two Americans of trying to play "Rambo" in a failed attack intended to unseat him.

In a live speech on state television Monday night, Maduro brandished what he claimed was a US passport and two people’s SIMs, along with what he said was their identity card for Silvercorp, a Florida-based security services company.

Maduro also showed what he said was a photo of the two men after they were arrested, and accused the couple of playing “Rambo” in a failed attack intended to remove him.

The footage posted on Maduro’s official Twitter account shows several unknown men on board with hands in the air and helicopters overhead. The people on the ship could not be identified in one video, but separate photos more clearly depicted two people Maduro claimed were Americans.

The CEO of Silvercorp, Jordan Goudreau, to the Washington Post that two Americans acting in a larger force were arrested on Monday, along with six Venezuelans, after launching an operation to infiltrate Venezuela. Goudreau said other members of what he called “Operation Gideon” were arrested or killed on Sunday.

Goudreau identified Americans as Airan Berry and Luke Denman, whose names match those on the Silvercorp ID displayed by Maduro. Goudreau, a former US Army Green Beret, said the two men were fellow former Special Forces members like himself.

CNN has reached US State Department and Silvercorp for comments but haven’t heard from.
Juan Guaido – an opposition leader recognized by the United States and more than 50 countries as Venezuela’s interim president – denied any links with Silvercorp on Monday, and called for the human rights of those arrested to be respected, Reuters reports.
