Mitis Hospital Center opened the first multi-problem clinic in Eastern Quebec on Thursday.
The organization provides intensive rehabilitation services for adults struggling with behavioral disorders.
“Users with all kinds of diagnoses, such as intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, physical disability, mental health or neurocognitive disorders at the level of the elderly, it is common to present severe behavioral disorders among the denominator user profiles” Serious at Bass-Saint-Laurent Center for Integrated Health and Social Services Behavioral Disorders Services Coordinator Karin Lagas explained.
The unit has four rooms, common areas and two rooms for patient isolation.
Previously services were provided at other locations within the Hospital Center. The upgrade of the new unit, at a cost of $5.1M, will provide safer locations for both consumers and workers.
The technology also enables interventions that patients could not do before, such as maintaining contact even when patients are in isolation.
Experts have thought for three years to develop the locations. The Director of Technical Services at CISSS du Bas-Saint-Laurent suggests that nothing stands a chance.
“We had to do a lot of research and development to see what the best practices were, we planned everything so that it would be strong over time,” says Francois Guimond.
The clinic, which is unique in the region, places clients in Eastern Quebec.
After a stay, the goal is to successfully reintegrate into another resource or even at home.
