Ontario reports 809 new COVID-19 cases, with the death toll at 3,000

A total of 213 people were hospitalized, 48 in intensive care units and 29 on ventilators in those units.

Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott said in a tweet on Saturday that there were 358 newly registered cases in Toronto, 123 in the Peel region, 94 in Ottawa and 76 in the York region.

A total of 700 cases of the coronavirus novel have now been identified as resolved, bringing the total number of resolved cases to 49,732.

The Ontario outbreak is 58,490 since it began in January or as of Saturday.

The network of provincial labs completed 44,298 tests on Friday.

According to the Ontario Cases webpage, more women than men die from the coronavirus novel. A total of 1,598 women died and 1,373 men died.

Limits aimed at reducing numbers

The latest case comes a day after the Ontario government announced it would take steps to curb rising COVID-19 infections.

Premier Doug Ford said the government had little choice, although it had argued for some time that it had not seen enough data to justify strong action. He said the information submitted by his health advisers on Thursday evening changed his mind.

“All the trends are going in the wrong direction,” Ford said. “If left unchecked, we risk the worst conditions ever seen in Italy and New York City.”

As of Saturday, indoor dining was banned in restaurants and bars in three hotspot areas, while gyms, movie theaters and casinos were closed. These measures are in effect for at least 28 days.

The government is also asking all Antarians to leave their homes. Schools and places of worship are open throughout the province.

‘These are not normal times,’ the premiere said

In a news release on Saturday, Ford asked all Ontario residents to celebrate Thanksgiving only with their immediate household members. If one person lives alone, that person can move into another home, Ford said.

“These are not normal times,” Premier said, and residents need to make adjustments.

“On the advice of the Chief Medical Officer of Health, it is not enough to limit the size of Thanksgiving meetings to 10 or less. We should all work to keep the sizes small by sticking to our immediate homes,” Ford said.

“If you live alone, you can move to another home to make sure no one is lonely or lonely during this holiday season, but please take the necessary precautions to keep meetings small.”

Toronto Health Medical Officer Dr Eileen de Villa gave slightly different advice in a statement to reporters Friday, saying people living alone should actually connect with loved ones during Thanksgiving.

“My advice is that Thanksgiving is only safe with people who live in your home. This is not an easy question to ask about people who live alone and I’m sorry to have to ask that. However, if possible, actually connect,” de Villa said.

Here is a list of actions that will take effect on Saturday for at least 28 days:

• Ban on indoor food and drink services in restaurants, bars, nightclubs and other food and beverage establishments.
• Closure of indoor gyms and fitness centers, casinos, bingo halls, indoor cinemas and performing arts centers.
• Closure of interactive exhibits in museums, galleries, zoos and science centers.
• There is a limit of 10 people inside the house and 25 people outside, where physical distance can be maintained for all social gatherings and public events.
• Prohibition on personal care services that require the removal of face masks such as beard trimming and makeup application.
• Restricting team sports to training sessions.
• Reducing real estate open houses for 10 people inside the home, where the physical distance can be maintained.
