A Halloween candy shortage is possible, Hershey warns

There could be a chocolate shortage this Halloween, Hershey, one of the largest candy companies, warned Thursday.

As a result, the little monsters look down on Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Twizzlers, and Jolly Ranchers during their candy harvest.

Company CEO Michelle Buck said in a conference call announcing the results that the company will struggle to meet demand due to supply chain challenges.

“Special pressures in Germany, which is facing an energy crisis aimed at reducing Russian gas supplies and limiting EU energy imports, are at the root of the company’s problems,” she added.

Since everyday and holiday treats are produced by the same production line, the company chose to focus on the former category.

“We had the opportunity to distribute more Halloween candy, but we didn’t. And we were actually producing,” Buck told the BBC.

Hershey’s net sales rose more than 19% to $2.37 billion last quarter, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.
