The city of Moncton continues to experience exponential growth and density. In two years, we will see one of the most imposing buildings ever built in the region and in New Brunswick.
The at least $70 million project — which will eventually cost much more — will break ground at the intersection of Harper and Main streets (in the area of the Chateau Moncton Hotel).
It will be more than 30 stories tall and have 288 housing units. By comparison, Place Assumption in the city center has 20 floors.
“It’s a very exciting thing for us. The building will serve as a bit of an entry point for people coming from Dippy or the airport,” said Bill Budd, director of development and planning for the City of Moncton.
“It’s going to be a real landmark, a well-known building across Atlantic Canada,” he said.
A huge four-level underground parking lot is located behind the imposing structure.
Around the tower, two to five floors of commercial space for restaurants and urban residences (townhouse type) will be created, creating a pedestrian zone.
“This arrangement allows the surrounding residents to avoid having the impression of finding themselves in front of a monstrous building,” said Bill Budd.
“The location is ideal. We have supermarkets near Place Champlain and many other services. It’s very close to where most people work.”
288 residences have one, two or three rooms.
“I believe this project will act as a catalyst for urban development in this sector in the next few years,” said the Director of Development and Planning.
According to him, the exit from the underground parking will be on King Street so there will be no traffic problem caused by such an imposing building.
The main street also has five lanes in this sector, which ensures smooth flow of traffic.
According to the schedule provided by the developers – Icon Developments Inc., construction should begin in a few weeks and last for two years.
The total height of the structure is not yet known, but it is known to be taller than the Bell Aliant Tower at 127 meters. Assume the length of the square is 80.8 meters.
