A nearly 1,000-year-old leaning tower in Italy is in danger of collapsing

One of the “Twin Towers” of Bologna, built almost 1000 years ago, is in danger of collapsing.

The city is currently “implementing a civil defense plan for the sudden and unexpected collapse of the tower,” reports CNN.

A metal rod was installed over the structure in an effort to strengthen it and “contain debris resulting from a potential collapse.”

Nets are also placed to intercept any debris before it hits the ground.

The committee, which has been monitoring the tower’s decline since 2019, has produced a 27-page report.

At 48 meters high, the “Garisenda”, one of Bologna’s “Twin Towers”, was built in the 12th century and was leaning by the 14th century.

Although the city has taken many precautions, Bologna’s municipal administration has assured that there is no danger of collapse “from one moment to the next”.

“We’re acting like the worst-case scenario is happening, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen,” a spokesperson told CNN. We pretend it will collapse soon, but no one knows when it will. It may take three months, 10 years or 20 years.

A device is available that assesses the strength of the tower every 15 minutes and allows quick movement around the monument if needed, we assure.
