Algeria has “successfully” started extracting iron ore from the giant Gaara Jebelet deposit in Tindouf, whose production is expected to reach 50 million tonnes from 2026.

In a press release published on Tuesday, August 16, Tindouf’s Wilaya Services announced the start of iron ore extraction operations at the Gara Jebilet mine.

“This morning, an operation to extract a large quantity of iron ore using explosives was successfully started,” the statement read.
The services of the Wilayah of Tindouf emphasized that the quantity collected will be transported by land, to the north of the country and that part will be transferred abroad “to be processed by our economic partners in China and Russia.”, another part. Processed by refining companies in Algeria.
According to the public channel AL24 News, 1,000 tons of iron ore were extracted from the Gara Jebilet deposit in this first operation. According to the energy minister, two to three million tonnes of iron ore can be extracted from this share between 2022-2025, before the volume increases to 40-50 million from 2026.
