“With our climate in Quebec, we would not be able to grow lettuce without this kind of soil there,” explained Jerry von Winden, CEO of Vegpro.
According to him, this generous type of soil is needed for growing lettuce, which prefers cold climates.
“It is a soil capable of storing water,” he continues. It is a soil capable of retaining four times more water than conventional mineral soil “.
In Quebec, without this type of soil, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to grow all kinds of lettuce, but this is the famous Mesklan.
On the one hand, with sandy soil, poor in nature, all water drains and cultivation becomes very difficult.
On the other hand, in rich clay-type soils such as those in the Saint-Hyacinth region, this is not so good.
“When it rains well, all the lettuce dies,” explains Vegpro’s first number to the ground.
The new prefect of the MRC des Jordins-de-Napierville, Yves Boer, is no doubt the property charm of the area’s land.
“We have exceptional black land. We have a wide variety of vegetables,” he summed up.
