Business Jet Finishing Center in Dorval | Bombardier and 3,000 Quebec employees are on strike

The union representing about 3,000 Bombardier workers at the business jet finishing center in Dorval is likely to go on strike if a new contract cannot be reached in principle with the Quebec plane maker.

The two sides were continuing talks on Monday, but Unifor warned its members could opt for a walkout “as late as tonight”. On Sunday, in the assembly, the workers rejected the principle agreement presented to them by about 60%.

The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Despite the results, Bombardier has returned to the table to continue negotiations in good faith with Local Union 62 (Unifor) to find solutions for the termination of the contract,” the company said in a statement.

At Dorval, workers at the finishing center are busy fitting the interiors of Bombardier luxury private jets, among other things. This is where the customization of the company’s flagship Global 7500 takes place.

A labor dispute hampers Bombardier’s ability to make deliveries. As of September 30, the business jet maker had delivered 74 aircraft to customers. The company is targeting at least 120 deliveries by 2022. Its year-end promises to be busy as at least 46 devices need to be completed.

Last spring, after difficult negotiations, Bombardier found common ground with its 1,800 employees, specifically in charge of an assembly of challenger members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW).
