Covid outbreak in camps: Hundreds of children return home

Outbreaks of COVID-19 in institutions have forced hundreds of children from summer camps in several parts of Quebec to be sent home.

“Fortunately, at the moment, it’s limited. We’re talking about 110 summer camps that are currently running in Quebec, and there are three camps where, unfortunately, we currently have to send young people home,” said Thomas Lepage-Gouin, president of the Association des Camps in Quebec.

At Camp Aureau, located in Notre-Dame-de-la-Mercy in Lanadier, nine cases of COVID-19 have been detected, more on monitors.

“The decision to close the camp was made in consultation with public health, the regional health team and our medical team at the camp itself,” explained Stéphane Richard, director of operations at Camp Aureau, in an interview with LCN.

Lack of staff is said to be the reason behind the decision to close the holiday camp.

About 150 camp parents had to pick up their children to bring them home earlier than expected.

Many are disappointed that their children will finally be able to experience a normal summer.

“It is difficult for me to imagine that a complete closure was announced and everyone suffered. This year, we told ourselves: finally they will experience a normal summer, where they will be able to experience normal activities appropriate to their age, which will not always be with a gray cloud over their head,” laments a mother. The Camps Association is now awaiting public health recommendations and hopes to apply the new health protocol in the coming days.
