Joel Schumacher, the flamboyant journeyman director who dressed New York section retailer windows prior to shepherding the Brat Pack to the huge display in St. Elmo’s Hearth and steering the Batman franchise into its most baroque territory in Batman Permanently and Batman & Robin, has died.
He was 80.
A consultant for Schumacher explained the filmmaker died Monday in New York immediately after a 12 months-lengthy battle with most cancers.

The success of his 1st movie, St. Elmo’s Fireplace, with Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez and Ally Sheedy, not only aided make a identify for the Brat Pack but manufactured Schumacher in demand in Hollywood. He followed it up with the 1987 vampire horror comedy The Dropped Boys.

Schumacher was lifted in Queens by his mom after his father died when he was four-a long time-aged. As a teenager, he quickly grew to become enmeshed in the city’s nightlife.
“The street was my education and learning,” Schumacher explained to New York magazine before this year.
“You could experience your bicycle above the 59th Avenue Bridge then. So I rode my bike almost everywhere. I was in Manhattan all the time and all above Queens. If you are a kid on a bicycle, something can materialize, and predators occur out of the woodwork, my God. I seemed quite harmless, but I was not.”
