Djokovic case: Pospisil accuses Australian government

Wasek Pospisil on Sunday blamed the Australian government for turning the Novak Djokovic visa into a political issue, thereby losing the Australian Open.

After a legal stalemate surrounding the medical exemption and two visa cancellations, Djokovic, unvaccinated, quickly left the country, just hours before winning the first Grand Slam tournament of the best rackets season.

“Novak would never have gone to Australia if he had not received an exemption from the government to enter the country (he received it, hence Judge Kelly’s original decision), Pospisil argued on Twitter.

“There is a political agenda here with the upcoming elections, it will not be more clear. It is not his fault. He did not enter the country by force and” did not make his own rules “; he was ready to stay at home.

Djokovic actually won the right to compete in the event by requesting a bye after being infected in December. However, the exemption was revoked when he landed on Australian soil.

The Serb challenged the decision and the first judge ruled in his favor. But the government used its discretion to expel 20 Grand Slam title holders due to “health risk”. This time, the Federal Court of Australia ruled in favor of the authorities.
