Antoine-Alexander Michaud was still stranded in his hotel in Honduras on Tuesday.

“My spouse may lose his full week of work and therefore lose income. Others have heart disease and run out of medication,” laments 36-year-old Antoine-Alexandre Michaud.

The Quebec City resident and about 60 other passengers have been stuck at the Henri Morgan Hotel in Roatan, Honduras since Dec. 26.

The first flight from Quebec was canceled earlier in the day and passengers had to board a later scheduled flight to Montreal, Michaud said.

“The flight took off unexpectedly due to lack of communication from Sunwing with our hotel. Time to go to safety, the pilot got us in trouble,” said Stephanie Ramsey, one of the passengers.

Mr. Michaud and his spouse tried several times to reach a Sunwing representative at the site, without success.

When they were finally able to speak with her on Tuesday, she replied that she didn’t know anything, Qubesser said.

Frustrated by the carrier’s inaction, the passengers booked their return flight on American Airlines. However, hundreds of other Canadian customers of the airline are still stranded overseas, including in Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Cuba.

Annie-Claude Vachon, for her part, is scheduled to leave for Cancun on the morning of December 26 with nine members of her family.

“When we woke up, we saw that the flight was postponed on the airport’s website, but on Sunwing’s website it was still on time. Finally, we decided to move,” Lavallois said.

At the airport, the group received a document explaining that their trip had been canceled and that they would be refunded.

“We went back home. The two teenage girls in our group were completely devastated,” laments Mrs. Vachon.

Sunwing apologized

“We sincerely apologize for any delays this holiday season,” the airline said.

Sunwing recommends that passengers monitor flight alert notifications. Customers who have booked a flight with another carrier will have to do so at their own expense and be compensated on their return home.
