The boss of a ride-hailing company called an Uber driver a “hero” after he stopped en route to help residents hit by a fire in New York City, CNN reported.
Fritz Sam was driving his passenger through Brooklyn to the airport Wednesday morning when a four-story building caught fire.
The driver decided to help people in the building after seeing flames coming from the window of one of the apartments and no emergency services on the scene.
The passenger, Jemima Vee, was alerted to the progress of the fire as some of the residents who followed him soon began to exit the building.
Knowing that there might be people in the building, the driver did not hesitate to go inside. As the fire was contained to the second floor unit, Fritz was able to move around the building and help the remaining residents evacuate.
Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after evacuating the last occupant. After making sure everyone was safe, the driver got back into his car to complete the ride.
“I spoke to this Uber hero – he was grateful that someone helped him move his car – when he crashed into a building,” the official tweeted on Thursday.
Officials told the media that no one was injured in the fire and the investigation is ongoing.
