Washington | A former U.S. Army sniper has opened fire in central Florida, killing four people, including a baby in his mother’s arms, officials said Sunday.
The suspect, identified as Bryan Riley, killed a 40-year-old man, a 33-year-old woman and her 62-year-old grandmother in a residential area along with her 3-month-old son. Polk County, Florida, County Sheriff Grady Judd said.
Bryna Riley, 33, who was wearing full body armor, also wounded an 11-year-old girl before going to police after a serious shooting, Sharif said.
The man, who is experienced in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, told police he was a “survivor” and had taken methamphetamine.
According to a Grady Judd statement posted on social media, the suspect said without explaining to police, “You know why I did this.”
Wounded in the shooting, the former sniper was rushed to a local hospital, where he again attempted to attack police and had to be drugged.
After receiving medical help, he was transferred to a local prison. Mr Judd said the motive for the attack was not immediately clear. An investigation is underway.
