General Motors temporarily suspended Twitter ads after Musk took over

Automaker General Motors said Friday it has decided to temporarily stop paying for ads on Twitter, becoming the first major advertiser to question its presence on the platform after Elon Musk took over the social network.

“We are speaking with Twitter to understand the direction of the platform under its new owner,” the group said in a message to AFP.

“As is common during a significant change in media platform, we have temporarily suspended our paid advertising,” the company adds.

But GM continues to respond to customer inquiries on its official Twitter account.

The group is a direct competitor to Elon Musk-led Tesla.

But advertisers generally avoid being associated with non-consensual content.

Still, Twitter’s new owner casts himself as a staunch defender of freedom of expression, leaving supporters of strong content regulation to fear the resurgence of hate speech or misinformation.

Elon Musk tried to reassure advertisers on Thursday that he wants to allow all opinions to be expressed without turning the site into a “hell” platform where everything is allowed.

He announced on Friday that he intends to provide the platform with a “content moderation council with very diverse perspectives,” without giving further details at this time.
