Health Canada recalls counterfeit hand sanitizer found in Dollarama, Ontario, National Canada

The agency said the recalled product was sold in 250ml containers, with a large number of 6942 and a May 2023 deadline.

“Because the fake version of the Daily Shield hand sanitizer is made with an unofficial and unknown formulation, it may not be effective in killing bacteria and viruses and pose serious health risks,” the notice said.

The counterfeit product is suspected to contain methanol, which is not authorized for use in hand sanitizers.

Methanol “can cause serious adverse reactions or even death when taken,” the agency said.

According to Health Canada, the product may be sold in Dollarama stores across the country.

The notice reads, “Health Canada confirms a complete list of places where the product has been sold.”

Dollarama agreed to stop production at its stores in Canada while the investigation continues.

The agency said anyone who bought the product should stop using it “immediately”.

“Consult your health care provider if you use this product and have any health or safety issues,” the notice said.
