When invited to the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin on Friday, Mme Clinton made the remarks at a pro-Trump rally on September 17, where many in the audience raised their index fingers in the air to congratulate the former US president. However, this gesture is associated with the QAnon conspiracy movement.
The 2016 presidential candidate also drew parallels between Trump and Hitler rallies.
“I remember when I was a student trying to figure out why people were attracted to Hitler. How did this happen?” That M.me Clinton.
“I watched some footage and saw this guy screaming and talking wildly while his supporters were shouting and throwing their hands up in the air. I asked myself: “What happened to these people?”, she adds.
For Hillary Clinton, there are similarities between these archive images and Donald Trump’s rallies.
“You saw that rally in Ohio the other night: Trump was there for over an hour ranting and raving, but all these young people had their hands in the air. I thought, ‘What’s going on?'” said the former US politician.
“I think it is fair to say that we are currently witnessing a struggle between democracy and authoritarianism,” she added.
