(Montreal) on Thursday announced the route chosen for the Hydro-Quebec Hertel-New York interconnection line, whose construction will begin in the spring of 2023 in Quebec territory.
The project will supply 1,250 MW of hydropower to New York City from 2025.
It’s a 25 – year deal for Hydro-Quebec, the state – owned company’s most important export contract, but did not disclose its potential revenues, although Premier Franకోois Legalt spoke on the networks last September, saying in principle the deal was more than 20 billion in 25 years.
The selected route has a 56.1 km underground segment and a 1.6 km underwater segment, most of which are public rights-routes. The eight municipalities in Montérégie are affected: La Prairie, Saint-Philippe, Saint-Jacques-le-Mineur, Saint-Édouard, Saint-Patrice-de-Sherrington, Saint-Cyprien-de-Napierville, Saint-Bernard-de-Lacol.
The last section of the route runs along Fairbanks Creek to the Richelieu River, where there is an interconnect point with the American Network. Further south is the 545-kilometer link between the Canada-US border and New York City.
Hydro-Quebec invites the relevant Quebec population to learn more about the project during two public meetings on December 8 in LaCol and December 9 in Saint-Jacques-Le-Minor.
Once in line service, the Quebec Line will be a joint venture between Hydro-Quebec and the Mohawk Council of Kahnawak, which will benefit from financial spinoffs for 40 years.
