A fire broke out in a residential building in Limoil on Saturday afternoon and more than 60 firefighters were called to the scene to prevent it from spreading.

Quebec City’s Fire Protection Service (SPCIQ) received several calls from witnesses later in the afternoon stating that there was a fire on the third floor of an apartment building on the corner of 2nd Avenue and 4th Street.

On their arrival the fire chief noticed a fire and the building was close to his neighbors and set off alarms within minutes. At 12:30 p.m., a fourth alarm sounded and 65 engineers rushed to the scene to fight the blaze.

“A man had to evacuate from his balcony on the third floor of the building using a manual ladder,” said SPCIQ spokesman Bill Noonan.

Assessed by paramedics she was rushed to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Another person needs to be assessed, but does not need to be sent to the hospital.

The Red Cross looked after a dozen tenants who could not return to their homes. By 1:15 p.m., the probability had increased and the major part of the fire had been reduced.

“We are checking the final spread to make sure everything is completely dry, especially with thermal cameras, to make sure there are no embers,” Mr Noonan said.

The fire department is investigating the cause of the fire.
