It is still too early to determine whether the sharp increase in COVID-19 cases currently observed in India is due to a variant (B.1.617) identified in this region of the world or due to a relaxation of health measures.

On the one hand, data obtained on the California variant with a mutation similar to the Indian variant (L452R) indicate a slightly increased probability of infection (20%) and a partial decrease in the neutralizing effect by vaccination.

If one relies on the results obtained with other variants (especially British and South Africa), it seems that these symptoms are sufficient to give the virus an asteroid increase in its infectious potential compared to the terrible efficacy of available vaccines.
