"It's disgusting!": Montrealers express their disgust with their city

In the middle of the tourist season, Montreal’s dirt can cause more than one aversion.

The condition of the city center leaves much to be desired due to the mountains of garbage on the sidewalks, overflowing trash cans, clothes lying everywhere and the nauseating smell that pervades many areas.

Several citizens interviewed by TVA Nouvelles criticized the situation.

Check out some of the reactions we collected:

“It is dirty all the time, especially at night. With restaurant waste, rats are everywhere.

“It’s really a shame to walk and see litter on the side of the street. It’s dirty, it’s messy.”

“It’s disgusting! I think it’s everyone’s responsibility to make an effort not to throw it in the trash and leave it on the street.

“It’s not clean from a jerk. It’s very dirty, especially downtown and Metro Berry. It’s horrible.”

The opposition parties and municipal bodies responded to this

As opposed to the city of Montreal, the issue has become an embarrassment to all Montrealers.

“What people see when they come to Montreal, especially in the entertainment district and in our tourist areas, is that it’s not a pleasant city; It is no longer such an inclusive city; It’s a dirty city,” said Stephanie Valenzuela, opposition spokesperson for the environment in the city of Montreal.

Mayor Valerie Plante’s office responded in writing to TVA Novelles, indicating that the city is deploying significant resources to provide visitors and citizens with a unique and enjoyable experience.

Teams work hard every day to ensure the cleanliness of Montreal’s city center.

This year, the sanitation budget for Ville-Marie Borough was increased by $2 million, for a total of $23 million.
