US President Donald Trump hoping this will be the week he appears to be a nation recover from a pandemic. Instead a pandemic came to him.
The day after breaking his own White House isolation for cross-country travel intended to signify the country’s readiness to restart, Trump accepted the news one of his Oval Office suitcases proved positive for viruses.
Two days later, Press Secretary Vice President Mike Pence also tested positive – starting another round of tests, delaying the vice president’s trip to Iowa and causing more problems inside the White House about who might be infected.
Why it’s important: The arrival of the coronavirus to the West Wing only serves to illustrate the continued spread of the disease month into a pandemic that claimed more than 77,000 lives of Americans and turning an economy that used to be hot to ice. Even deep cleaning every night, routine testing and a lot of fancy cannot prevent the virus from arriving at Trump’s doorstep.
When the President incited countries to loosen their limits and allow Americans to return to work and business, the view of their aides who had contracted the disease did not greatly increase the confidence of the nation ready to return to normalcy, even when skyrocketing unemployment claims were never seen . -Before the levels and options for reviving the economy fail.
At the same time, it did not have a clear effect on Trump’s willingness to proceed as usual on Friday, when he avoided the mask when visiting with nonagenarian World War II veterans and invited a large group of MPs to the White House for a meeting, all of which were tested before arrived. When asked why his staff did not wear masks on Friday, Trump pointed to one of the White House officials in the room: the White House photographer.
This is all part of Trump’s business-like approach, which becomes the standard when it looks like it will get through the plague.
