Kamala Harris, more than a symbol

Due to the attack on the Capitol on January 6 and its fall, the media paid less attention than expected that Kamala Harris would be sworn in.

In fact, when she appeared in her husband’s arms, she was away on social media wearing a stunning ple da color ensemble. The color of combining democratic blue with Republican red is a call for political unity, for political consent. Purple also endorsed the dress color chosen by Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman to be elected to Congress in 1972.

The swearing-in of Ms Harris before the first Spanish-speaking judge in the history of the Supreme Court is no small feat. Sonia Sotomayor and Vice Presidents for a few minutes represented women and minorities to rise to the most prestigious positions in American political institutions.

Beyond the image

Beyond these powerful images, very little attention has been paid to the true power that Kamala Harris now possesses. It can also be argued that she is currently the most influential woman in Washington. We often point in the direction of Nancy Pelosi when she wants to associate women with power, but we already believe that the Speaker of the House has a lot to do to maintain unity in her forces and to prepare for her legacy.

The Kamala Harris effect should first be noted in the Senate. The upper house is divided equally between Democrats and Republicans, with the final decision being made. The complexity and collaboration between Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will continue to be sought until the 2022 midterm elections.
